What This Tool Does

The Rent Affordability Calculator helps you work out a realistic monthly rent budget before you start apartment hunting. Instead of guessing, it takes your pre-tax income and your existing monthly debt obligations — such as a car loan, student loan, or credit card payments — and turns them into three practical rent ranges: a conservative, a moderate, and an aggressive option. This gives you a clear picture of what "affordable" actually looks like for your specific financial situation rather than relying on a single rule of thumb. The calculator supports several currencies, including the US Dollar, Euro, British Pound, Indian Rupee, and the Hungarian Forint, so it can be used by renters and property searchers anywhere in the world. Whether you are budgeting for your first apartment, comparing cities, or simply reviewing your finances, this tool gives you a fast, no-signup way to check your numbers before signing a lease.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Choose your currency from the dropdown menu (USD, EUR, GBP, HUF, and more are supported).
  2. Enter your pre-tax income and select whether it is a yearly or monthly figure.
  3. Enter your monthly debt payments — include car loans, student loans, credit cards, or any other recurring debt. Enter 0 if you have none.
  4. Click Calculate to instantly see your conservative, moderate, and aggressive rent budgets.
  5. Use Clear to reset the form and start again.

Worked Example

Scenario: Anna earns 15,000,000 HUF per year pre-tax and pays 50,000 HUF per month toward a student loan.

Her monthly pre-tax income is 15,000,000 ÷ 12 = 1,250,000 HUF.

Applying the moderate 30% guideline: 1,250,000 × 0.30 = 375,000 HUF, minus her 50,000 HUF debt payment, leaves an estimated affordable rent of about 325,000 HUF per month. The calculator above performs this same math automatically for the conservative (20%) and aggressive (40%) tiers as well, in whichever currency you select.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is affordable rent calculated?
The calculator converts your income to a monthly figure, then applies three common budgeting percentages (20%, 30%, and 40% of gross monthly income) and subtracts your existing monthly debt payments. The 30% figure is the most widely cited general guideline for rent affordability.
Why does my debt reduce the affordable rent amount?
Lenders and financial planners generally look at total monthly obligations, not just rent in isolation. Subtracting existing debt gives a more realistic picture of what you can actually set aside for housing each month.
Which currencies are supported?
The calculator currently supports USD, EUR, GBP, HUF (Hungarian Forint), INR, PKR, CAD, AUD, JPY, and CHF. Figures are not converted between currencies — the calculation simply applies the percentages to whichever currency and amount you enter.
Is 30% of income always the right amount to spend on rent?
No single percentage fits everyone. 30% is a widely used starting point, but people in high-cost cities, with dependents, or with significant savings goals may prefer the conservative 20% option, while others may reasonably stretch toward 40% for a short period.
Does this calculator store or send my financial data anywhere?
No. All calculations run directly in your browser using JavaScript. No income or debt figures are transmitted, saved, or shared.
